You're going to thank Tom Monday for his midlife career change. Early this year, he left the world of music marketing and turned his considerable energies to mapping local food and drink across America. Think microbreweries, charcuterie, pastries, and you're on the right track. Small Batch America currently contains six city guides including Chicago, Nashville and Austin, with Los Angeles up next.
Monday tracks down a knowledgeable local in each city to compile a list of their favorite places. For the Nashville guide, Monday co-opted the three founders of a hugely successful artisan market. Their must-see (and taste) list includes the Jackalope Brewery, Otaku South ramen house (pictured) and a small candy store that supplies simple syrup to the city's newest bar, The Stone Fox.
Monday may have left the world of music behind, but he's taken decades of wisdom and applied it to this second act. “With all the changes in the music industry, I’ve seen indie musicians become very entrepreneurial — making, distributing, marketing and selling their own products," he says. "That same entrepreneurial, DIY spirit is shared by this new generation of small batch food and drink makers and it’s fueling something of an indie food and drink revolution.” — Cerentha Harris
