T Time

Finding the perfect layering T-shirt is like shopping for a swimsuit: Preferences are highly personal and few rules apply. But as the temperature drops, the long-sleeved tee — ideal for layering under a sweater — gains an edge over summer’s short-sleeved standbys. Beyond that, there are a couple of questions to consider. RIBBED VERSUS SMOOTH: A fine-ribbed T-shirt can be flattering, but not to everyone. Just as it highlights the curves of a trim body, it will also accentuate a midriff bulge. After a certain age, a smooth T-shirt is usually more attractive. COTTON VERSUS BLENDS: Again, either kind of fabric can feel and look great. Keep in mind, however, that a blend such as cotton/modal gives the T-shirt weight and drape — and a drapey fabric is often an advantage when you’re past your 30s. If you’re a devotee of cotton, there’s no incontestable reason to change. But it might be time to break with precedent and give a T-shirt in another fiber (such as the stylish tees here and here) a try. — Lola Ehrlich and John Birmingham
