Calling in Sick

Sickweather is one of the first smart apps we've seen that could truly be called a "life-saver" (or if you're a hypochondriac, a "life-ruiner"). That's because the innovative new iPhone application is designed to warn you when some poor, sick soul is getting too close, ideally giving you a head's up before anyone can breathe their germs on you. It works by scraping data off social media — the program catalogues any posts or tweets from ill users complaining of symptoms, and then dumps all that information into one handy real-time "contagion map." Picture the traffic app Waze with a really bad cough. As cool as this free app is, perhaps its greatest accomplishment is making a Facebook status update actually good for something. —Adam Albright-Hanna
