Soundgarden's world has been rocked by the shocking death of frontman Chris Cornell. The 52-year-old singer and songwriter reportedly hanged himself in the bathroom of his Detroit hotel room late Wednesday night, shortly after the band's concert at the Fox Theatre.
A local medical examiner has ruled the death a suicide.
Cornell is survived by his second wife, Vicky, and their two children: a 12-year-old girl named Toni and an 11-year-old boy, Christopher Nicholas. Cornell also has a 16-year-old daughter, Lillian Jean, with his first wife, Soundgarden's manager Susan Silver.
The family issued a statement expressing shock at Cornell's "sudden and unexpected passing" and said it "will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause."
Cornell and Soundgarden were among the early pioneers of Seattle's grunge scene in the early 1990s, paving the way for bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Alice in Chains. Cornell's seething voice powered hits like "Rusty Cage" and "Black Hole Sun."
After Soundgarden broke up in 1997—they would reunite in 2010—Cornell recorded four solo albums and teamed up with three members of Rage Against the Machine to form Audioslave in 2001. They disbanded six years later, but reunited in January to perform at Prophet of Rage's Anti-Inaugural Ball, a counterpunch to President Trump's inauguration festivities.
Cornell's famous friends and colleagues have been expressing their grief on social media.
"Shocked and saddened by the sudden death of @chriscornell," Elton John said on Twitter. "A great singer, songwriter and the loveliest man."
Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page tweeted, "RIP Chris Cornell. Incredibly Talented. Incredibly Young. Incredibly Missed."

Billy Idol tweeted, "Sad 2 hear of Chris Cornell passing...great singer and artist…another blow…RIP
"I am so saddened," tweeted Gavin Rossdale. "Total shock. Great man. Great band. Great loss. Love to everyone in his world."
