A Princess Diary

Naomi Watts caught flak recently for saying she “felt Diana’s presence” on the set of “Diana,” the soon-to-be-released biopic in which she plays the late Princess of Wales. But even the more-skeptical critics have been impressed by Watt’s marked resemblance to “the people’s princess,” who was killed in a car crash while being chased by Paris paparazzi on August 31, 1997. Stills from the movie, which pays special attention to a clandestine love affair with British Pakistani surgeon Hasnet Khan (Naveen Andrews), evoke news photos from the ’90s, and a trailer promises high melodrama. It’s a fair bet that “Diana” will have an emotional impact when it premieres in London on September 5, less than a week after the anniversary of Lady Di’s death. Later in the month, when the movie hits U.S. theaters, cooler heads may prevail. — John Birmingham
